But the experts will say there is a bigger more relevant reason to observe DST. That is to save energy! And as it is all the rage to ‘go green’ now a days the argument seams to make sense. The later a person is awake at night, the longer they have the lights/electricity on. So we go to bed, turn the lights off, and do the world a favor. In the 70’s the DOT published a report stating that each day of DST, cuts the entire countries energy usage by roughly 1%. Of course the always ‘progressive’ state of California pushed for year round day light saving, publishing a report demonstrating how they could save hundreds of millions this way.
In 2008 a study was published claiming that DST actually increases the amount of energy used, though it is primarily focused on the state of Indiana.
So are we saving energy or not? Who knows? The DOE will have a new study in a few years which will supposedly be the definitive answer, but until then the debate rages on. Of course we all know that home brewing is a very green hobby. No electricity required to get that tasty IPA bottled up!
Whether you are fighting for the environment or just looking forward to enjoying the sun for another hour after work, the only thing that is certain, is that you don’t want to stroll into work an hour late. So do the world a favor, do yourself a favor, and be sure to move that clock back before you settle in for the night this Sunday.
Cheers,
